RWBY (pronounced "Ruby")[6] is an American anime-influenced developed estimator-animated web series created past Monty Oum for Rooster Teeth.[7] [viii] It is ready in the fictional world of Remnant, where young people train to become warriors (chosen "Huntsmen" and "Huntresses") to protect their world from monsters called Grimm. The proper name RWBY is derived from the four main protagonists' forenames: Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang, and their respective theme colors (red, white, blackness and xanthous).[9]

Following several promotional trailers, the first episode was screened at the Rooster Teeth convention effect RTX and and so released on their website in July 2013. Subsequent episodes were released approximately weekly, offset to Rooster Teeth'southward subscribers and and so to YouTube a week later. The serial became a viral hit, and a second season, subtitled Volume 2, was released in July 2014.

Oum died in 2015, during production of the third flavour for the series.[10] This resulted in a delay in the production, likewise as an overall shift in the series production and release schedule. Despite the creator'due south decease, the remaining coiffure members confirmed their intention to go along the series,[11] and Volume three was released in 2015 as planned.[12] Meanwhile, the first two seasons were released to home media and made available on streaming services such as Netflix and Crunchyroll, the latter of which would include releases of the current flavour in their simulcasts. In October 2016, the 4th season was released. The series has too been dubbed in Japanese and broadcast by Tokyo MX,[thirteen] in partnership with Warner Bros. Nihon. Development [edit]

My vision for the prove was to present a two-dimensional, toon-shaded wait, but with all of the depth and complexity of a 3D-blithe production. I wanted to be able to move the cameras and characters freely while yet capturing the essence of the apartment, line-drawn await of traditional anime.

RWBY had been a long-standing concept of Oum's for years before information technology began development. Towards the terminate of his piece of work on the tenth flavour of Rooster Teeth's Red vs. Blue, he developed the color-coding approach to character names and design as a hook for the serial.[17] During production on Carmine vs. Blue season x, Oum asked series creator Burnie Burns if they could produce RWBY post-obit the decision of that season. Burns, worried for the production schedule, told Oum "If y'all cease Season ten, and then you can practice whatever you lot want." Production on RWBY began equally intended, with the commencement trailer existence finished within 2 weeks and premiering after the credits of the Red vs. Blue season 10 finale on November five, 2012.[18]

Oum designed the characters with assistance from artist Ein Lee, utilizing designs inspired past classic fairy tale characters.[17] Each character has an associated color, and information technology is the first letters of the main character's colors, red, white, black, and xanthous, that give the series its proper name.[19] The characters' names too share the same letter and the significant as the colour (e.k. "Weiss Schnee" translates to "snow white" in German). The series was originally written past Oum, along with boyfriend Rooster Teeth employees Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross.[twenty] Oum was initially concerned about a story focusing on female characters being developed by a primarily male person coiffure, simply said they managed to do well developing the female characters.[18] Regarding the design, Oum wanted to "present a two-dimensional, toon-shaded look, just with all of the depth and complexity of a 3D-animated product". Seasons 1 to three were animated past Rooster Teeth'due south internal animation team using Smith Micro's Poser software, out of avails built on Autodesk Maya.[21] [22] Starting in Season 4, episodes are now beingness animated in Maya. The series' music is composed past Jeff Williams, who previously equanimous the soundtracks for Seasons 8–10 of Red vs. Blue, and features vocals by Williams' girl, Casey Lee Williams.

Reception [edit]

Disquisitional response [edit]

Since its debut, RWBY has received generally positive reviews from critics. Commentators discussing the promotional trailers lauded the show'south animation fashion and its musical soundtrack. The trailers prompted enthusiastic apprehension for the series premiere.[20] [25] [27] When the get-go episode premiered at RTX, it was popular with attendees to the betoken that seating was total at all three screenings. Amanda Rush, writing for Crunchyroll, noted the anime and Western influences of the serial, and praised it equally "quick-witted, exciting, lovely to look at" maxim fans of anime would relish it.[23] The Yakima Herald-Republic called information technology "thrilling" and "captivating" and praised its "cute" 3D character animation.[121] The Austin Relate described the premiere as making Oum the "rock star" of Rooster Teeth.[122] By mid-2013, the series had reportedly contributed to a ix% increment in views for Rooster Teeth'south official YouTube channel.[123] Kotaku'south Richard Eisenbeis praised the series for its clever employ of fairytale elements, fun and enjoyable dialogue, and the fighting choreography, simply was critical about the brusque nature of the episodes, stating that, "The biggest drawback in doing a micro-series ... is that there is precious little time for expert characterization". He was too critical of the technical bug of the animation, mentioning that the blitheness is good when the audience is unable to run into the character'due south feet. He believes that RWBY is "a adept first stride into a world of possibilities."[124]

Associations with anime [edit]

"As huge fans of anime, we are honored that RWBY is the first American anime product to exist exported to audiences in Nippon."

— CEO Rooster Teeth Matt Hullum[125]

Lindsay Jones (Ruby-red Rose) said "We were worried about the reception nosotros'd get, since we're a western company producing something unremarkably related to Japan. Funnily plenty, we showed our Japanese cohorts RWBY and they started arguing near whether information technology was anime or non! Only seeing the reception from audiences is so surreal, and we never expected it."[126] A Movie Pilot web log listed the RWBY-equally-anime topic among its "flame wars yous don't want to be part of".[127] Anime News Network writers Paul Jensen and James Beckett wrote: "Nosotros don't take whatsoever formal reviews of RWBY here on ANN, but it is kind of cool to run into an American product make it to the release encyclopedia."[128] Michael Mauer of The Cornell Daily Sun wrote that the issue was still being debated amidst the anime community,[129] while Sabrina Pyun of ComicsVerse wrote "The show is known for many things, from its dubious status as an anime to its unique 3D animation style."[130] Nevertheless, mainstream news manufactures dated afterwards Hullum'southward argument and previewing later seasons and the franchise have referred to RWBY as an American anime, including Variety,[131] Collider,[132] iDigitalTimes,[133] Amusement Weekly,[134] Adweek,[135] and Deadline Hollywood.[136]
