Repair Front Lens Sigma Art 1.4

Aaargh! My Sigma 35mm A has cracked... worth repairing?

Aug 8, 2015

Hello I wonder if you can help. I'm gutted as the glass on my beloved Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art seems to have cracked. It appears to be near the front of the lens, but the surface is smooth so perhaps not the front element. Is this something that's repairable? If so how much should I expect to pay? Or is it usually just insanely expensive to replace the actual glass?

Any advice welcome!

If it were me, I'd get a repair estimate and go from there.

How did that happen? Sigma has a warranty on their lenses, but it won't cover drops. Do you have the lens list d in your homeowner's insurance?

Certainly not dropped... I honestly have no idea. I was heartbroken when I spotted it today.

very unusual.. I would send it to Sigma. Their R&D might be interested to check the properties of the glass and what caused the crack. Was the lens exposed to dramatic changes in temperature?

See what Sigma says about the cost of repair and decide. They might do it for free if you write them a nice letter

Please let us know the outcome

Ouch! That's brutal. All you can do is get an estimate. Man, I'd love to know how that front element cracked. If there is no impact ding on surface of the glass or huge ding in the lens barrel, I think it is a stress fracture from improper manufacture.

I feel your pain, I'd be heart broken. Just out of curiosity, how is the image quality now? Seriously.

Did you use a sun shade to protect it?

I hope you post what you end up doing and what it costs.

Their warranty is for materials and workmanship. They should be able to tell how this happened and determine the cause was not mishandling.

When you contact them - point them to this thread - and let them know there's dozens of Sigma owners and potential owners all waiting to see what the outcome is!

They should always be aware these things don't happen in a vacuum, and good word of mouth is the best sales tool.

I don't think they care about this thread. They probably sell all the Arts they can make.

Obviously they don't but I hope their R&D does... I was watching a video from Sigma recently on DPR and they seem to be a family owned / caring company. So I hope they do the right thing and replace the glass free for the OP.

Hey there, I'm wondering what was the outcome?

The exact same thing just happened to my 35mm.

Inspect the lens. With many Canon lenses, the front element is easy to take off. This one looks different though.

Sorry to hear your problem, how is the image come out with that crack? I have seen worse crack on the front element but hardly affect the image, unless the light just enter the "right" angle then it will show.

I have dropped my Sigma 35 Art from shoulder height and hit the solid side wall, it flew out of a not fully zipped backpack, all it did to it was very deep scratch and everything including AF works flawless, so I was really surprised how well build this lens is. and prior to this incidence, I have bumped this lens into trees and rock many times while hiking and backpacking, one time even cracked the lens hood, so I am really surprised to heard your issue.

if it actually affect the image quality, send it in to see what they said, it's dead anyway, you maybe surprised how much they charge for front element replacement, I have friends did that few years ago on our Canon and Nikon lens, the cost was pretty cheap, one guy got his front element replaced on his 70-200 2.8 IS for about $300. you can't buy a used 70-200 for $300,  and year ago another guy got his 85L done for around the same price, but that was like 4 or 5 years ago. so these kind of thing is pretty cheap. so send it in and update us what they say. I don't have any first hand experience with the Sigma repair service and their price.

What's was the outcome of this? I opened my camera bag today and found the same thing on my 35 as well

Let us know which Canon lens you decide to buy instead! jk

If more seriously, here is the teardown

https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/12/sigma-35mm-f1-4-dg-hsm-art-lens-teardown/

Front element (or front element assembly) should definitely be cheaper than the lens. A fair price is probably under $300, but you should contact Sigma for quote. The assembly can be changed by a non-pro, according to the teardown.
